In Manitoba, local Councils are responsible for 60% of infrastructure yet receive just 8 cents of every tax dollar to get the job done.
Adding to the pressure is that municipalities often have little to no say in how the rest gets spent – despite the fact that they live and work in the communities they represent, so are in the best position to identify top priorities.
Backed by solid research acknowledging that 85% of Manitobans agree that municipalities deserve a fair share of infrastructure dollars and a fair say in how they are spent, the AMM launched a 6-week campaign leading up to the 2016 Provincial Election.
The AMM’s “Fair Share, Fair Say” campaign identified the following goal: To engage Manitoba’s political parties in the discussion about the need for a new infrastructure funding model and a new partnership with Manitoba municipalities.
