Job Description:

This is a permanent full-time union position. Mechanic is responsible for maintaining, repairing, inspecting and diagnosing all fleet vehicles and large engines to include rebuilding and building parts; welding, fabricating and designing parts; and performing major restorative vehicle maintenance. Work is performed with limited supervision.

Hours of work are Monday to Thursday 7:00 am to 4:30 pm & Friday 7:00 am to 3:30 pm. Wage is $31.29 per hour in accordance with the current Collective Agreement.

Key Responsibilities
The duties listed below are intended only as illustrations of the various types of work that may be performed. The omission of specific statements of duties does not exclude them from the position if the work is similar and related.
•Performs preventive maintenance on a variety of vehicles which includes: performing oil changes and lubrications according to pre-established schedules; fueling vehicles and equipment; road testing vehicles; inspecting vehicles in the shop and field. modifying, fabricating and installing new parts using welding equipment; maintaining and repairing gasoline engines and similar equipment;
•Performs preventive maintenance on applicable equipment and a variety of vehicles, which includes:
performing oil changes and lubrications according to pre-established schedules; fueling vehicles and equipment; road testing vehicles; inspecting vehicles in the shop and field; modifying, fabricating and installing new parts using welding equipment; maintaining and repairing gasoline engines and similar equipment;
•Overhauls, repairs, and maintains a wide variety of vehicles and equipment and their component systems and computerized automotive systems; troubleshoots, diagnoses and performs major repairs and overhauls to engines, involving inspection and replacement of broken or worn parts such as pistons, piston rings, valves, bearings, fittings, wrist pins and gaskets;
•Diagnoses, repairs, cleans, adjusts and installs fuel, ignition, electrical and cooling systems involving repair and replacement of such parts as carburetors, fuel pumps, starter motors, distributors, generators/alternators, voltage regulators, wiring, switches, batteries, radiators, thermostats and water pumps;
•Diagnoses, repairs, and overhauls transmission systems including such parts as clutches, standard transmissions, differential units, front and rear axles, gears, bearings, universal joints and hydraulic units;
•Removes, repairs and replaces tires and wheels; diagnoses, repairs and adjusts steering mechanisms and other controls;
•Reads and interprets manuals, drawings and specifications; estimates labor, material and equipment and orders parts required to complete assignments;
•Prepares oral and written reports of work performed; completes forms and keeps accurate maintenance records;
•Stores, maintains records and arranges for disposal of hazardous waste materials such as oil, tires, batteries and other supplies and equipment related to the work;
•Uses and maintains a full set of hand, power and shop tools and equipment related to the work; observes safe work methods and utilizes safety equipment related to the work;
•All other duties as assigned.

Job Requirements (minimum standards)
•Grade 12/ GED Equivalent;
•Heavy-duty mechanic’s licence certification recognized within the province of Manitoba an asset.
•Five (5) years’ experience as a mechanic (a combination of education and experience may be considered).
•Class 1 Commercial Driver’s Licence an asset.
•Provide an acceptable Driver Abstract.
•First Aid CPR training and certificate is mandatory, will be provided by employer

•W.H.I.M.I.S. training would be an asset

•Experience with DC electrical systems and engine controls.
•Experience with cutting and welding equipment considered an asset.
•Manitoba Ozone Protection Industry Association certification and experience with air conditioning systems considered an asset.
•Manitoba Vehicle Inspection Certificate considered an asset.
