The Leader has produced many special reports over the years, but unbelievably never one on recreation. We've tackled health and healthy living (Summer, 2007), quality of life (Spring, 2007), and greening of municipalities (Spring, 2003; Summer, 2008; and Summer, 2009) but never one devoted specifically to recreation. Increasingly, municipalities are recognizing recreation as an essential service, and there are many organizations and funding programs to support that service. Recreation is truly an investment into our communities, and this special report highlights how municipalities can get the most for their recreation dollar (including words of advice from those who have been through the daunting, yet very rewarding experience of building a community recreation facility!)

This jam-packed issue also recaps the AMM's highly successful 13th Annual Convention (in words and pictures); provides an overview of this year's Diamond Jubilee celebrations; and explains how to put your community's trees on the map.

Of course all our regular features are here too, including a municipal profile re-introducing the AMM's Executive Team and introducing a new Director; a peek at the 2012 Education Program; and a brand-new regular article on human resources.
