Job Description:

The Rural Municipality of Morris is located minutes south of Winnipeg and comprises approximately 400 square miles.  With a growing population of 3,047 and a very active farming and manufacturing community we boast several urban centres such as Rosenort, Lowe Farm, Sperling, Aubigny and several smaller hamlets. The Town of Morris is also situated within our boundaries, however they have their own municipal government.  Although sometimes prone to spring flooding, we also have some of the best farmland in Manitoba.

This is a new position for the municipality which has been created out of the desire to better serve our urban communities. Reporting to the Public Works Manager, you will create and lead a program designed to enhance and beautify our urban centers. Depending on the candidate chosen for this position there is a high probability that this position may also become the Assistant Public Works Manager, with a primary emphasis being on the urban works side of the department.

As the ideal candidate you will have worked in the municipal sector or related area and are best known for your ability to effectively manage operations, assets and people in a cost effective and customer service orientated manner. A thorough knowledge and understanding of the challenges in operating and maintaining an urban area would be considered an asset. You are a creative thinker with a consultative management style and possess a high level of personal integrity as you will provide a vision and direction for the present and future development of our municipality.

Words such as Manager, Communicator, Leader, Team Player, Self Starter are some of the traits that we are looking for.  In addition we would like someone with the following practical skills to fill this career position:

Traits we are seeking:

  • Common Sense approach to problem solving
  • Ability to manage a summer staff team
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills with the ability to work independently but with a consultative, teamwork approach.
  • Ability to meet the finer details of urban communities, such as having a critical eye about works that could or should be done to enhance and beautify a community, in order to instill community pride
  • Knowledge of tree care – i.e. maintenace such as trimming, watering, etc.
  • Cemetery planning & maintenance
  • Some working knowledge of various types of equipment would be considered an asset
  • Valid driver’s license. Minimum Class 5

 

Traits which would be considered assets:

  • Ability to read and interpret blue prints and construction drawings
  • Knowledge of Geographical Information Systems (GIS) and the ability to update same
  • Construction background in Urban Roads, Sewer, Water, etc. would be an asset
  • Water & Wastewater certification or the ability to obtain in the near future
  • Experience with operation of landfills
